William Shakespeare wrote The Tragedy of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark sometime at the turn of the 17th century in a period personally overshadowed by the death of his son Hamnet. Irish writer Maggie O’Reilly makes a convincing case in Hamnet her recent, celebrated novel that Shakespeare’s play – in its relentless deferrals and interrogation of archetypes – is a work characterised by grief.
The seminar will continue its close reading of Hamlet in order to examine themes of theatricality and literary conceits in contemporary popular culture. Furthermore, we will research and reflect on PoC, feminist, socialist and queer productions of a tragedy capable of "seemingly endless retelling and adaptation by others”. (Thompson and Taylor, Arden Edition).
Field Trips and Excursions:
There will be weekly trips to exhibitions and live performances (performance, theatre, concerts).
