Nocturne 30: THE CAT INSIDE / A LIVE IN COLOGNE

The Cat Inside is A LIVE by Ramuntcho Matta and Yellow Shark. This live is a tribute to William Burroughs and Brion Gysin.

Brion Gysin was a painter, writer, sound poet, and performer. He is known for his discovery of the CUT-UP technique, used by William Burroughs.

In the end of the 50’s is growing what is known today as modernity in art as well as in literature.  The Machine has already integrate it self and is, moreover, claimed.  Brion Gysin drew his interest on computer science in 1959 influenced by Ian Sommerville how helped him understand the technique to cut and build words and phrases.  This technique used in the montage surrealist is the same used in movies.

Gysin thought writing was fifty years old late on painting.  Under his influence Burroughs decomposed his own language with a small tape recorder.  He was stopping the recording randomly.  This was considering language as a matter, changeable and malleable, with no end or beginning.  Burroughs was about to change Art in a significant manner.

Nowadays literature, music and painting have codes witch can be crypted and remade.  This process was finished when the theory of the chaos essence fused with the binary number system. Thanks to this achievement Art could be more personal.

The Beat hotel where William Burroughs and Brion Gysin used to meet was the very place of birth of the contemporaneous sensibility. The live is based on Ramuntcho MATTA’s experience with William Burroughs and Brion Gysin. It is a questioning on our perception of time and reality thought the media surrounding us.
