“If you have ever been to Lagos you will understand why sound is my preferred medium as an artist. One of the first impressions of the city is the intensity of its soundscapes.”

"Sound plays a vital role in the composition of the city—one of the first observations about Lagos is the intensity and omnipresence of its eclectic and rich soundscapes. Since 2008, my recordings of the city comprise the Lagos soundscapes project to explore Lagos as a vibrant African Mega city. As the name suggests, the project is invested in acoustics, however, essential to my practice is to maintain and preserve a corpus of accumulated sound that identifies Lagos as the economic, commercial, entertainment and cultural capital of Nigeria. The project at its foundation involves actively recording and collecting the endless sound varieties alive in the city that distinguish its character and vibrancy. Such sounds permeate and intersect across multiple layers and transform into a free concert of different sounds, complementing and competing against each other, and converging within the corpus of Lagos soundscapes. In doing this, the project maps the contour of the relationship between Lagos population and its produced soundscapes. Urbanization, transport developments and even everyday lifestyles all affect the city’s continuously changing soundscapes and perpetuate an updated catalogue of this transient ambience."

          Emeka Ogboh
