KHM Vorträge (6): John Kameel Farah – The Unfolding Creative Process

John Kameel Farah, Komponist, Pianist, elektronische Klangerzeuger und Künstler, führt seine Musik unter Verwendung von Klavier, Synthesizern, Computer sowie bisweilen auch des Cembalos auf. Seine Stücke entfalten sich aus einem Zusammenspiel aus Improvisation, Komposition und elektronischer Musik – beeinflusst durch Elemente barocker Tastenmusik, arabischer Musiktraditionen aus dem Nahen Osten und elektronischer Clubkultur.
An ausgewählten Werken werden Hintergründe, Entstehung und Verknüpfungen der verschiedenen Elemente seiner Musik in Bezug auf kulturelle, kulturhistorische und kulturpolitische Fragen offen diskutiert. John Kameel Farah hat an der Universität in Toronto Komposition und Klavier studiert und wurde dort zweifach mit dem Glenn Gould Composition Award ausgezeichnet. 1998 führte er die gesamten Solo Klavierwerke Arnold Schönbergs auf. Im Jahr darauf erhielt er Privatunterricht bei Terry Riley in Kalifornien. Farah ist Preisträger des K.M. Hunter Artist Awards for Music 2011 und tritt regelmäßig in Toronto und Berlin auf. Internationale Tourneen führten ihn u.a. durch Europa, die USA, den Nahen Osten, Brasilien, Mexiko und Südkorea. Seit Anfang diesen Jahres ist Farah Electronic-Composer-in-Residence für Soundstreams Canada. --- Composer, pianist, electronic producer and visual artist John Kameel Farah will discuss the various elements that go into his work, relating his experiences in a life that straddles classical, experimental, jazz and electronic music scenes. The format will be half-lecture, and half concert, with John speaking about how he came to integrate these unlikely musical elements together, and also playing and explaining examples of melodies, rhythms and electronic sounds from his works before performing them in total for the audience. Farah will also discuss repetition and variation, and how musical ideas can be developed, showing the similarities between a 16th century English Cembalo piece and an Arabic classical piece, then performing his own piece which combines all of the techniques together in an electronic soundscape. Throughout the evening, topics discussed will range from Astronomy to ancient history, to the Crusades, to globalization. Farah will also introduce the audience to the "Atonal Maqam", his own method of piano improvisation where ornamented, asymmetrical scales unfold over drones, combining Arabic melodic elements in an atonal context. John enjoys explaining complex musical theories in a way that everyone can understand, and invites audience questions and discussion. Also a visual artist who creates intricate ink drawings, slides of Farah's artwork will be projected during part of the evening. Berlin/Toronto-based John Kameel Farah studied composition and piano performance at the University of Toronto, where he received the Glenn Gould Composition Award, and later had private lessons with Terry Riley in California and at the Arabic Music Retreat in Massachusetts. He has toured across the U.K., Europe, USA, Canada, the Middle–East, Brazil, South Korea and Mexico, and is a member of the Canadian Electronic Ensemble.
