KHM
Theory/Practice Seminar (Fachseminar) - How Stuff Performs in New Media Practice. Ab 17. Mai.
17.05.10
Filzengraben 8-10
Raum 2.04
Artist, researcher, writer and professor for digital media at Concordia University in Canada is a guest professor at the KHM for the Summer Semester 2010. Salter's theory/practice seminar "How Stuff Performs" explores the increasing interest artists, scientists and scholars have in performance in the areas of bioart, new "performative materials" and computer-based interactive systems.

What does it mean that matter, objects, code or sensing systems "perform"? Why do we attribute liveness and life to inanimate matter and technology? How are non-human things, objects and processes described, constructed, exhibited and interacted with? The seminar will examine these issues in two specific ways. First, we will read and discuss as a group selected texts from cultural theory, philosophy, performance, aesthetics and science studies. Second, we will discuss and give group-based feedback to participants' ongoing individual and group artistic projects that explore and play with these concepts.
