The New Hollywood

This seminar continues from the Winter Semester's seminar, The L.A. Rebellion. It focuses on the films, actors, writers and directors of what is sometimes called the New Hollywood. A particular emphasis is placed on the political and historical context of this film-making, including the Vietnam war, the Black liberation movement, and the movement for women's and LGBTQ+ rights. Comparisons will be made with the earlier seminar, but attending the L.A. Rebellion winter semester seminar is not a required prerequisite. Texts will include works by George Jackson, Hunter S. Thompson, Grace Lee Boggs, Susan Sontag, Joan Didion and others. Readings will be on reserve in the library. The seminar will be conducted in English. The films will have English subtitles. Students will be required to keep a weekly journal.
