A Study of Weaving as Technical Mode of Existence

In this talk I will critically examine a fundamental difference between the digital and the analogue, which becomes apparent with synchronization. While in the digital domain synchronization is a precondition for computation, in the analogue it is not a necessity but an emergent effect, that is based on subtle interactions. In the analogue, instead of being abstracted away, variations, influences and modulations make a difference. Through the combination of subtle variations of external conditions and internal parameters these can be rendered into macroscopic discrete events. On a phenomenological level such system may seem discrete and appear to follow coded rules, while on the functional level below it is not governed by discrete symbols, but by graded change.
In the talk I will use different devices and experimental setups to illustrate and make tangible these ideas on subtlety in analogue processes.
