KHM
28. - 29.04.11
In this workshop dj sniff will cover issues in working with the vinyl medium and recorded media at large in a performance based practice. What is the relationship of "playing" and "play-back"? How can one reflect an recorded moment from the past within a performative moment of the now? How can one imagine a new form of turntable based music utilizing new computer technology? Participants will learn about the history and practice of turntable and vinyl based music covering both Hip-Hop / DJ culture and experimental turntablism. Yann Leguay will present two of his projects; Cutter Off and Unstable Quasi Stacic Crackin. Starting from a blank vinyl and using surgical tools connected to micro-contacts, which creates both incredible sonic and visual experience to the audience. On the way of Nicolas Collins , Bruce Sterling's "Dead Media project" and of course Christian Marclay's work, with participants in the workshop he is going to operating a diversion of different medias, experimenting on the materiality of sound and the media distortions.
///////////////// artists info:
dj sniff (Takuro Mizuta Lippit) is a turntable musician working in the field of improvised and experimental music. His music focuses on the live reconstruction and narrativization of the phonographically amplified - the music, the sound, the technology and the past. To achieve this, he uses a unique setup of custom hardware and software along with one turntable and DJ mixer. He hopes he can reflect his influences from Hip-Hop and Free Jazz not stylistically but through an exploration of a distinct instrumental voice and practice. From 2007 on, he is STEIM's Artistic Director, guiding the institution's creative output and representing it's activities through performing and lecturing around the world. http://djsniff.com http://www.steim.org/steim/
