The project is devoted to comparative analysis of basic spatial models and notions inherent in different traditional cultures. It is based on the research of different formations of world outlook, which are reflected in visual languages of various cultures and are recorded by material artifacts. It intends to discover similar basic elements of worldscape, forming the foundation of artistic culture, to enumerate visual models and schemes, which are common to various cultures. Visual interpretations of these notions,
especially which are fixed in cultural artifacts, are very productive materials
for special comparative interdisciplinary researches, and can help to establish
links between different historical and contemporary cultural surfaces,
to discover in modern cultural environment the traces of ancient influences.
The intentions of the project also are: ° to learn more about the cultures which are outside the traditional Western paradigms; ° to be more aware of the basic spatial notions of the various cultures; ° to have a possibility in making a shift from the Euro-centric system of outlooks to the world-wide one; ° to know more about the authentic environmental and spatial perception. The interdisciplinary nature of this topic,
which is developed on the boarder between arts , humanities, and new media
may be good for solving some of the problems, connected with understanding
the arts not only in the historical descriptive back looking, but as well
in contemporary perspectives.
This research is a kind of an archeology of spatial notions, expressed in visual languages of different cultures, which paradoxically are the reason and the result of differentiation in world perception. The present days tendency of shifting towards the visual type of communications, domination in the media and computer graphics messages, which are based on the visual patterns and images, makes this work quite actual, and helpful in discovering some basic communicative elements of contemporary and ancient visual languages.
