Mi You to speak at Aspan Gallery, Almaty at the opening of Alexander Ugay - Topology of Imge

2.3.2018
EXPO Villa
Almaty, Kazakhstan

Aspan Gallery presents Alexander Ugay's first solo show Topology of Image. The exhibition will feature a selection of Ugay's photographic and video works, as well as the artist's novation - a series of optical objects "Obscurations". According to the artist, an Obscuration “as an image, an object, and as a situation in space, is simultaneously a photographic and a spatial object. It can be a form of documentation of places of memory, or a new way of working with archive and memory.”

To accompany the exhibition, Aspan Gallery will produce a catalogue featuring essays by the curator and researcher at the Academy of Media Arts Cologne Mi You and the independent art critic and curator Yulia Sorokina. Both authors will also be speaking at a panel discussion hosted by Aspan Gallery on Saturday 3 March.

Photo and video artist Alexander Ugay is one of the most renowned contemporary artists from Central Asia. In his works he deals with the issues of memory and nostalgia, exploring the interaction of history with the current reality and the future. Many of Ugay’s photo and video projects are aimed at studying the relationships between collective and personal memory, and collective and personal space, focusing on the concept of time and its flows. Notable recent exhibitions include Festivities are Cancelled! at the Kyiv Biennale (2017), 6th Moscow Biennale (2015), Busan Biennale (2014), Promises of the Past, Centre Pompidou, Paris (2010), Younger Than Jesus, New Museum, New York (2009) and 9th Istanbul Biennale (2005).
