An early adopter of microcomputers for live performance, Nicolas Collins also makes use of electronic circuitry, conventional acoustic instruments, and hybrid electro-acoustic instruments. Collins presents his artistic praxis which is positioned at the intersection of art/technology and music composition/live performance. New York born and raised, Nicolas Collins lived most of the 1990s in Europe, where he was Visiting Artistic Director of Stichting STEIM (Amsterdam), and a DAAD composer-in-residence in Berlin.  He is editor-in-chief of the Leonardo Music Journal, and a Professor in the Department of Sound at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.  In 2013-14 he is David Tudor Composer-in-Residence at Mills College (Oakland, California); Edgard Varèse Guest Professor for Computer Music at the Technische Universität Berlin; and a Visiting Professor at Instituto de Música of the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile.
Collins has the dubious distinction of having played at both CBGB and the Concertgebouw. His book "Handmade Electronic Music: The Art of Hardware Hacking" (Routledge), has influenced emerging electronic music worldwide.
