stage 1: creating a prototype and several initial modules for the intended database interface - an on-line tool that would faciliate group work in areas from information sharing (setting up a mini-portals for groups) and other kinds of projects that might be related (but not limited) to the the "capsule container" seminar themes.

(some open-source PHP scripts will be possible used and combined for the initial phase, modified for tuning it to the specific needs for the project.

technology: MySQL database, PHP (Scripting Engine) and Java, VRML.

functions: text, image, sound and physical location coordinate input and the relationship establishemnt among the uploaded objecs, comments and categories and specifications.

stage 2: setting up a dedicated extranet server (i.e. both for KHM intranet and accessible from internet outside) implementing the best fitting modules and enhanicg them, and involving more collaborationg people in the development. Possible (in negotiation!) partners: members from KHM (Kunst- und Medienwissenschaften), GMD (IMK-MARS) with several related projects like "netzspannung.org" and others dealing with information visualisation).

Content Abstraction and Context Exchange (CACE) Engine
module for NICE on-line database

INTRODUCTION

an intention to develop an experimental on-line  (Internet) database platform was made in the end of 1999.

As the next step a project for more sophisticated version of the interface and extended functionality is planned. A special interest the specific area of the project – establishing an general open platform for exchange of cultural content among network participants, and data exchangeability standards between related satellite projects.

This module (which might be called universal content abstraction and contextualization engine) is a set consisting of database structure, algorithmic indexing, user interface tools and data exchange protocols would give a new possibilities  for use in various kind of content, text, images, sounds, URLs, events for various applications, ranging from practical use information exchange tool internet portals and web projects or even as a additional production tool for networked installations or multi-media projects.

ENGINE APPLICATIONS

PORTAL / DATABASE INTERFACE MODULES:|
News, Events, Announcements, Areas,  Locations, Institutions, People,  Projects, Statistics, Contexts, Keywords, Search

Information about Events (headlines) are accessible either via the main site or possible to choose among several versions of  RSS channels , that can be integrated in other portals (widely used in various Linux or pop-music fans’ portals, for example). small -> medium size group of editors. Input and output are interfaces to the database system where CACE mediates between Self Organizing Maps (SOM) and User Organizing/Defined Maps (UOM).

INTERFACE WITH OTHER PROJECTS

MOBILE PROJECTS

In case of the intended projects involving travel or remote locations - possibility to capture, upload and index images, video sequences, sounds during the travel.  The uploaded media would be contextualized with the log of a  the Global Positioning System (GPS) devices, and time.

Here the CACE Engine could be the organization tool to use the accumulated material to in “virtual travel recreation”. The geographical data, with a progressive zoom factor (from landscape to city, to exterior, to interior, to object, etc) can be organized in a structural way, suitable for other applications.
