What does the recording Show?
The camera was fixed to one of the forward anchor bitts on the
bow of the vessel, looking over the starboard rail toward the horizon.
There was naught but moonlight, clouds and the expanse of water to be observed.
What can be heard?
The wash of the ship's wake as we cut through the waves, the internal hum of the vessel's machinery.
Please describe the place where you are doing the recording
The Pacific Ocean, a few days east of the Japanese Coast.
Please describe the exact location
Vessel transited from 39-36.4N 151-36.6E to 39-46.6N 152-01.1E.
What is special to the location, why did you choose it?
Absolutely nothing-- our location was determined by our vessel's position at the time specified in your request.
What happened at your ship on the 9th of September?
The day was entirely uneventful - everyone performed their assigned and accustomed duties, ate their usual meals, watched videotaped movies or slept. Those of us who participated in your project scrambled around to find film and cameras that might be of use - none of us really had adequate equipment so we made do with what we had.
What happened at your location/part of the ocean on the 9th of September?
The weather was lovely.
The pictures we send you really don't do the night justice - it was a beautiful night; with a full moon interrnittently peeking through low clouds.
We rolled gently through the water, accompanied for the period of your project by a group of dolphins who surfed in our wake.
Phosphorescent jellyfish occasionally drifted by us, lighting the sea.
A ship approached us on the horizon from the east but we were miles from one another and had no contact.
What did you do on the day of the recording?
I was on watch from 0800-1200, ate lunch, was on watch from 1300-1500, exercised and relaxed in the sauna, went to dinner, was back on watch from 1800-2000 and then watched a little TV before commencing with your project then reading before sleeping.
What would you normally be doing at the time of recording?
We nearly always watch a movie after the day ends (for me) at 2000. If not that - perhaps reading.
