THE PARTICIPANT PORTRAIT

JENNIFER SCHWERIN - BEIJING

Name
Jennifer Schwerin

Age
34

Religion
Buddhist

Family
One husband, one son, one dog, another kid on the way

Profession
Independend filmmaker
I make documentaries and quiry experimantal films and I am trying to write and direct my first feature film

Passion
Good films and other art, good writing, hikes in the woods and mountains, red wine, late night talks with friends, big nature, the sea, live music

How do you live
We live in an apartment in Beijing next to a 24 hour construction place

What did you do on the day of recording
I looked at locations, I checked equipment, I took care of my son Sam

What would you normally be doing at the time of recording
I would be feeding Sam his dinner and watching him throw it all over the kitchen

What do you prefer for breakfast
Ideally a ripe papaya with lime, or rice porridge, but these are difficult to find
Usually I eat a banana and drink a good cup of coffee

What do you prefer for the day`s most important meal
Something spicy, like Thai food, a good hot shrimp soup

What do you believe in
Mindfullness and compassion
Lots of laughter, goofy delirium, the cleansing power of "big nature", trying to focus on the moment

Your favourite TV show
I don't have a TV just now in Beijing, but this last year it's a tie between Seinfeld and the Larry Sanders Show. Seinfeld is always so funny and Larry Sanders... Well, how can you be wrong with a spoof of a talkshow that is both cynical and funny?

What did you do in your last vacation
We went to an old plantation in South Carolina with 6 other friends and 6 other children and rode horses and ate oysters and made big fires and relaxed. We saw alligators in the swamps, we shot off fire works and lookd at the moon

What does the word "Time" mean to you
Time is a man made idea. What time refers to for me is the constant flux of the universe - change. I'm constantly trying to focus on NOW instead of the dream of the future, but it's hard. We're so conditioned to look at our calendars and make plans. No matter how hard I try to collaps time into the moment, it still just seems to slip through my fingers

Why are you interested in the WorldVideo 40North Project
I was interested in the idea of a video of what was happening all over the world at the same moment. I was interested in the vision, the perspective, like a 360 degree view. It seemed like it could collapse time into one big NOW, which seemed like a very healthy endeavor

Whishes for the world
I always wish the world less pain and suffering and more happiness. But I also wish people would realize the only thing they can control is themselves, so the rest...let it go. Which is another way of saying don't be too serious

Personal commentary
My motto - Strive for goofy delirium, in one's art and in one's life
