Hinter der buehne sassen von einer wand unsichtbar gemacht operators an ihren terminals zur digitalen schnellrecherche und formulierung von antworten vom vorstand zum aktionaeren. Auf der buehne und hinter der buehne. Ein doppelter kontrollraum, der eine auch physische doch nicht in einem bild auffassbare welt, zu definieren vermag. Eine verhandlung - ein von echt-zeit-recherche unterstuetzter dialog - um die auffassung des zu kontrollierenden oder tatsaechlich kontrollierten raumes: kein zufall, dass zu jenem anlass der konzern eine kugelprojektion von NASA-aufnahmen der erde praesentiert, eben zur visualiesurung des kontrollierten raumes.
"Neben der Erddarstellung, die den Blickwinkel eines Astronauten ermöglicht, wurden Bildmotive aus der [konzern]-Welt, eine Weltkarte der [konzern]-Standorte sowie weitere Aufnahmen zum Thema „Mensch und Natur“ auf die Kugel projiziert. Eine (...) Computersoftware berechnet die aufwendige Kugelprojektion in Echtzeit, so dass der Erdball beliebig gedreht werden kann. Diese Software ermöglicht Effekte, wie z.B. das Verschieben der Tag- und Nachtgrenze oder das Einblenden von Wolkendecken. "Something in the Air" is an installation dealing with the
element "air" and the research of "atmosphere". Metereological
data is gathered by a weather station and sent as "live" scientific
data such as wind force, wind direction, hours of sunshine, rain, temperature
and humidity to a computer in the exhibition room.
The continuous metereological data stream is translated into signals to
drive digital sound, scent, and light-generators. According to specific
weather situations, 25 different accords of piano music, are activated.
The scientific data are translated into air molecules (scent), air movements
(echo, sound) and physical wave-length of the light and allow in this
way a more intensive and changed perception of the everyday phenomena.
The volatile atmosphere is unstable - the visitor can experience the changes
- and recognize which change of weather produces which scent, sound or
change in the intensity of light. Scent stations in the exhibition room,
are activated according to the data gathered by the weather station. Smells
can be associated with temperature, dryness or humidity - similar to sounds
and colour intensity. A dialogue is created between inside (artistic translation
of scientifically measured and calculated data) and outside (sculptural
weather measuring station).
The installation "Something in the Air" works with volatile,
non-visual elements in air (sound, smell). The consciousness and the perception
of the visitors, which expose themselves to the coded air resonance and
light streams are intensified. A central part of the installation is a
polished stainless-steel table on which 12 petri dishes are placed, each
containing a different satellite image of a place of the earth with extreme
weather conditions (the hottest, the driest, the coldest, the windiest,
the most humid ……places on earth). Through an opening in the
middle of the table a video of images collected by an outside camera will
be projected onto the ceiling. The video of moving clouds from the outside
is transmitted into the inside and will be mirrored on the glossy surface
of the table. The viewers will experience an enhanced perception of climate
and its effects on human beings and their survival.
The whole installation can be experienced as an experiment with the climate
- interchanging outside/inside. The perception of local and global weather
is altered - interlinking scientific and sensory processes.
In Japan, the installation will be shown in a more extended version. Here
the local weather data and their translation into sound, scent and light
- are being contrasted with the weather data from those regions of the
world which have extreme weather conditions and which are shown in the
illuminated satellite images on the table and in this way creating an
even more complex composition of sound, scent and light. ->

d'habitation 1990
Das Video Proposition d'habitation ist eine Gebrauchsanweisung fuer eine Reihe
von Zellen in Form von Cockpits. Der Kuenstler hat sie zum eigenen Gebrauch
entworfen. Es handelt sich um sechs kleine Modelle im Massstab 1/1, die auf
die Groeße und Korpulenz des Kuenstlers zugeschnitten sind. Einfache geometrische
Raeume, gestrichen oder mit weissem Gips bedeckt, die keine besondere Funktion
haben. Diese weissen, makellosen, geschlechtslosen Haeuser laden den einzigen
Darsteller, Absalon, zur Isolierung und Selbstbeobachtung ein.
Die Zellen (Prototyp einer Wohnung) sind zwischen 4 und 9 mq gross. Jede Zelle unterscheidet sich scheinbar von der anderen, enthaelt jedoch die gleichen Grundelemente, das lebensnotwendige Minimum, das für eine einzige Person erforderlich ist: eine Kochecke, eine Arbeitsecke –- ein Tisch und ein Stuhl zum Schreiben, Lesen und Essen - ein Garderobenschrank, der auch als Bett dient, ein Regal, eine Dusche und ein WC.
Das Innere dieser "Zellen" stimmt mit dem Aeusseren ueberein: einheitlich weiss, eingebaute Elemente. Diese Objekte, die aus Kombinationen aus Kubus und Zylinder, Viereck und Kreis bestehen, aehneln Moebeln, sind jedoch absichtlich unfunktionell. -> quelle

This is a survival
car made in 1997. The Autocrat is meant to enable survival in places that
are remote from the civilized world. Actually it’is just a big kitchen
with a sleeping area. There’is a kitchen outside as well for the
heavier work. The design and manufacture of the car were also carried
out with autocracy in mind: every effort was made to use homemade items
and to avoid ready-made products as much as possible. The suspension and
locks were made this way, as was the cooker.
This work plays a key role in the development of AVL-Ville and gave rise to
the slaughter project. In this project, a pig was slaughtered on the farm in
the traditional way, and all parts of the pig were used and/or preserved by
means of drying, salting, smoking, pickling or through other methods.

In two unremarkable houses in London's East End, Gregor Schneider constructed a remarkable new work, Die Familie Schneider. 14 and 16 Walden Street were identical in every way. They had the same rooms and furnishings with the same cracks and stains, inhabited by the same families doing the same, unseemly things.
Die Familie Schneider could only be visited alone. Amongst the visitors who made their way through the intensely claustrophobic rooms were the writers Andrew O'Hagen and Colm Tóibín. Together with an extended series of stills from inside both houses by Gregor Schneider, their writings attest to the disturbing experience of Schneider's dark double houses.

The Spine, das Rückgrat – so bedeutungsvoll nennt das britische
Gesundheitsministerium jene weitgehend automatisierte Datenbank, die den
Kern ihres Reformprojekts bildet. Wie in anderen Ländern soll das
Gesundheitssystem Großbritanniens, der NHS (National Health Service)
weitgehend digitalisiert und modernisiert werden. Das National Program
for Information Technology (NPfIT) ist eines der ambitioniertesten IT-Projekte
der Welt. Etwa 30.000 niedergelassene Ärzte sollen mit 300 Krankenhäusern
vernetzt werden. Die Datensammlung wird bis zu 50 Millionen Krankenakten
enthalten. Namen, Telephonnummern und Adressen der Patienten sind bereits
aufgenommen, weitere Informationen sollen folgen. ->

This research project explores our often ignored yet real relationships with Familiar Strangers.
