Media and Fine Arts Diploma Degree

The Academy of Media Arts Cologne (KHM) was established in 1990. The challenging project-based study it offers brings together practices, theories, experiences and reflections from the fields of film and television, art, exmedia and art and media theory, in one course: the “Media and Fine Art” diploma degree.
Between media, around media or without being defined by any medium in particular, the KHM creates a special experimental climate for independent, artistic work. The individual development of artistic projects, their guidance and reflexive appropriation, is at the core of the “Media and Fine Art” degree course. These projects are supported by the interdisciplinary supervision of professors, artistic and academic staff, and technicians. Student work takes place in the ateliers, studios and laboratories of the KHM, which are equipped with high-quality facilities, oriented to the wide variety of subjects taught.
The following study emphases and fields of action are to be understood as interchangeable and combinable examples:

•   2D Animation / 3D Animation / Games
•   Art and Media Sciences
•   Art in Public Space / Performance
•   Artistic Photography
•   Creative Producing / TV and Internet / Live Broadcast
•   Cinematography / Camera / Editing
•   Cognitive Design / Transformation Design
•   Documentary Film / Feature Film
•   Experimental Film / Video art
•   Maker Culture / Internet of Things
•   Politics of Networks and Apparatus / Code
•   Script / Dramaturgy / Writing
•   Sound Art / Sound Research

Furthermore, the connection between artistic praxis and theoretical discourses, with film theory analysis and aesthetic and philosophical questioning, is an essential component of the course, the teaching and research. Building on this, the KHM doctoral programme makes the scientific/theoretical development of research projects possible with its PhD degree.
There are around 60 to 70 new enrolments to the KHM each winter semester, with an annual average of around 350 students in total, of which approximately one third come from outside Germany. They are supervised by a teaching staff of around 30 professors, 20 artistic and academic staff, 20 technicians and a further 40 staff members.
The Academy of Media Arts Cologne degree is internationally comparable with a MFA (Master of Fine Art). The Kunsthochschulgesetz  (Art Colleges Act) provides the legal foundation for the KHM as well as six other art and music colleges in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia.

KHM students, whose course work and final pieces is shown in numerous exhibitions, at festivals and symposiums, regularly receive renowned prizes and awards.
The trans-disciplinary approach in teaching and research, the on-going collaboration with colleges, both domestically and internationally, with cultural institutions, festivals, exhibition organisers as well as the media and film industries also paves the way for networks and activities in the broad fields of art and media in which students work after graduation. They work successfully, for example, both individually as well as in collectives, as artists, programmers, film directors, camera men and women, scriptwriters, designers, producers or in other self-employed businesses. And a substantial number of them now pass on their competence in college teaching roles.

The KHM also offers a Doctoral Programme leading to a PhD in philosophy ("Dr. phil.").
