Artefacts - Doctoral study
The Academy of Media Arts Cologne, founded in 1990, promotes an interdisciplinary approach to the media arts. It offers an ambitious educational concept that brings together the fields of film, art and theory in one course of study.
Since the winter semester of 2009/10, the Academy of Media Arts Cologne has been offering a newly formulated doctoral course, Artefacts, which culminates in the award of a PhD. With this the academy pursues the goal of promoting an approach to research that is based on artistic and media practise, and follows innovative lines of questioning.
One of the special aspects of the Academy of Media Arts Cologne is that it enables a close networking of and with renowned artists and theorists; art-related doctorates should also make use of this opportunity.
Up to seven possible places on the PhD course will be announced for the winter semester 2011/12. Applicants are invited to submit an exposé on their planned doctoral project (about 3–4 pages) as well as a work plan and timetable (approx. 2 pages). A CV, copies of certificates and proof of a recognised degree are also to be included. Establishing contact with a prospective tutor is not a prerequisite. The doctorate should be completed within 3 years, the final paper
will take the form of a classic dissertation. Individual tutoring will be complimented by regular compulsory events such as thematic and interdisciplinary colloquia and the doctorate takes place in collaboration with universities. Unfortunately no scholarships can be awarded, however, assistance with funding applications will be provided. Applications with the aforementioned documents are to be submitted before 4 April 2011. Hearings will take place on the 10/11 May (with a separate invitation). Please send your application to:
