The KHM is advised and supported by a board of trustees, which was inaugurated in 1991 under the chairmanship of Norbert Burger, Lord Mayor of Cologne.
The Verein der Freunde der Kunsthochschule für Medien Köln e. V./Friends of KHM is chaired by Henrik R. Hanstein and is a non-profit organisation that supports the artistic endeavours of the Academy in a variety of ways.
The Centre for International Art Management (CIAM) was founded in May 2005 as a joint facility of Cologne University of Music, the Robert-Schumann-University Düsseldorf, the Art Academy of Düsseldorf, and the KHM Cologne, which offers a postgraduate MA study course in Art Management.
The KHM has a cooperation agreement with the Film and Television Academy (HFF) “Konrad Wolf” in Potsdam-Babelsberg on collaboration in teaching and research as well as student exchanges.
Since 1996, there has been a successful programme in operation for student exchange with the Escuela Internacional de Cine y TV (EICTV) in San Antonio de los Baños in Cuba.
Since 1991, the KHM has the opportunity to present current student work at Art Cologne international art fair at an extra stand (publications).
In 1998 Alfred und Hedwig Neven DuMont inaugurated the Spiridon-Neven-DuMont-Award, a prize which is presented annually to an outstanding young artist from among the students of the KHM.
The KHM is a member of the Medienwerk NRW (North Rhine-Westphalia), founded in 2001, which is an open, multi-discipline network of various media art venues and NRW institutions whose main focus is the field of media art. The network is supported by the State Chancellery of NRW.
The KHM is founding member of the Media Initiative Ghana, a non-profit association initiated by Prof. Peter F. Bringmann and Prof. Marcel Odenbach to support the media education in Ghana. In co-operation with the National Film and Television Institute (NAFTI) in Accra the Media Initiative Ghana organised seminars and helps provide technical equipment.
